Pokémon Teases New 2027 Movie Centered Around the Trading Card Game
After years without a new Pokémon feature-length animated film, Pokémon is officially heading back to the big screen in 2027 — and this time, the Trading Card Game is at the heart of the story.
The newly announced Pokémon: Wild Card follows an aspiring Pokémon TCG player alongside his partner Pokémon, Mimikyu. The movie is being produced with STORY inc. and CloverWorks, with Katsuhiko Kitada serving as director.
It’s an especially fun concept considering how massive the Pokémon Trading Card Game has become. Collecting, grading and record-breaking sales often dominate the hobby conversation, so a movie focused on actually playing the game and chasing a goal with your favorite Pokémon feels like a refreshing change of pace.
Mimikyu is also an interesting choice for the spotlight. Rather than building the story around Pikachu or another traditional franchise mascot, Pokémon is giving one of its most recognizable modern characters a major role alongside the film’s aspiring TCG player.
Pokémon: Wild Card is scheduled to begin releasing in 2027, with more details expected as production continues. For collectors and competitive players alike, a full Pokémon movie centered around the card game should be a pretty fun change of pace.
