TCG Player Rankings: Rayquaza Leads the Market in August 2026

Rayquaza has claimed the top spot in Gempire’s August 2026 TCG Player Rankings, delivering the strongest market performance across the six-month, three-month and one-month periods.

The latest rankings compare five recognizable characters/players from across the trading card market: Rayquaza, Ahri, Monkey D. Luffy, Son Goku and Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Rather than measuring popularity alone, the rankings track how the market for each player has performed over multiple time horizons.

The result is a cross-TCG snapshot that captures both sustained growth and recent momentum.

Pikachu and Charizard Remain in a League of Their Own

Pikachu finished July as the highest-selling Pokémon on eBay, generating approximately $16.1 million in sales. That represents an increase of more than 120% from the $7.2 million recorded during July 2025.

The result reinforces Pikachu’s position as one of the deepest and most liquid markets in the hobby. Trophy cards, Japanese promos, vintage releases and popular modern cards all contribute to demand across nearly every price point.

Pikachu’s strength also comes as Pokémon celebrates its 30th anniversary. According to eBay, users searched for Pokémon more than 360 times per minute in 2025, while the number of Pikachu items sold increased by more than 120% year over year. Read eBay’s complete Pokémon market update.

Charizard remained close behind with $14 million in July sales, up from $6.4 million one year earlier. Vintage Base Set cards, Gold Stars, Crystals, EX-era releases and modern chase cards continue to make Charizard one of the most consistently traded characters in the market.

Gengar Breaks Into the Top Three

The biggest development near the top of the rankings was Gengar.

Gengar climbed from sixth place in July 2025 to third place in July 2026, with monthly sales rising from $1.9 million to $6.7 million. That represents an increase of approximately 253%.

Demand for Gengar has expanded well beyond a single card. Vintage holos, Japanese exclusives, Gengar VMAX alternate art and newer Mega Evolution releases have helped turn the character into one of the strongest markets in the hobby.

Mew followed in fourth place with $5.6 million, while Umbreon slipped two positions to fifth despite generating a much higher sales total than last year. Umbreon increased from $2.7 million to $4.8 million, showing that a decline in rank does not necessarily mean demand has weakened. In this case, other characters simply grew faster.

Rayquaza and Dragonite Continue to Gain Momentum

Rayquaza climbed into sixth place after generating $4.3 million in July sales, compared with $1.4 million during the same month last year. That represents an increase of more than 200%.

The character continues to benefit from strong demand across the EX era, Gold Star releases and modern alternate arts. Rayquaza’s rise has made it one of the clearest examples of collector demand expanding across multiple generations of cards.

Dragonite posted an even larger year-over-year increase.

After ranking 19th with $595,000 in July 2025 sales, Dragonite jumped 11 positions to eighth place with $2.4 million in July 2026. Its sales volume increased by more than 300%, the largest percentage gain among the returning characters inside the top 10.

The result is another reminder that collectors are increasingly looking beyond Pikachu and Charizard. Characters with deep histories, recognizable artwork and meaningful cards across several eras are attracting substantially more activity.

Darkrai Makes the Largest Move

No Pokémon climbed more positions than Darkrai.

After ranking outside the top 30 last July, Darkrai surged 37 positions to claim the No. 13 spot with approximately $1.3 million in sales.

Snorlax also made a major move, climbing 13 positions to No. 14 with $1.2 million. Greninja advanced nine positions to No. 17, while Psyduck jumped 10 spots to No. 19.

Further down the standings, several characters entered the top 30 after ranking below the cutoff last year:

  • Squirtle climbed 11 positions to No. 27 with $855,000 in sales.

  • Deoxys jumped 18 positions to No. 28 with $815,000.

  • Raichu advanced 11 positions to No. 30 with $760,000.

  • Charmander moved up seven positions to No. 23 with $935,000.

The Pokémon Market Is Expanding Across the Board

The top 10 characters combined for approximately $61.6 million in July sales, up from $27.7 million one year ago. More importantly, every position in the top 30 generated a higher sales total than the corresponding position in July 2025.

That suggests the current strength is not being driven by one card, one set or one narrow section of the market.

Pokémon’s 30th anniversary, major modern releases and renewed interest in vintage cards are all contributing to activity. Recent expansions such as Mega Evolution—Pitch Black have also kept new products and characters in front of collectors throughout the summer.

Pikachu and Charizard remain the undisputed leaders, but the most interesting story may be what is happening behind them. Gengar, Rayquaza, Dragonite and Darkrai are gaining ground, while numerous characters that previously sat outside the top 30 are becoming million-dollar monthly markets.

The hierarchy is changing—but collector demand is rising almost everywhere.
